- About the artist
Walter Leclair (December 20th, 1954) is a Belgian artist who attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium where he studied Graphic Design under Jef van Ruyssevelt.
Leclair has won the first price of the Province of Antwerp in 1976. He also worked as a comic strip artist and cartoonist for a year and has made illustrations for several monthly and weekly magazines.
After this brief period Leclair decided to study fine oil painting at the workshop of Belgian painter Maarten Boffé. This was the starting sign for his first exposition in Antwerp in 1982, followed by many more throughout Belgium. He is known for his classical still lifes and extremely romantic art, which combines ambience and presentation.
His scenes are rooted in old literature. Leclair is inspired by the Norse mythology, the King Arthur legends and the Middle Ages. His landscapes symbols of human feelings. His homemade art nouveau frames are the expressions of a somber splendor. Leclair, who immersed himself in the works of Baudelair and Blake as well as the novels of Poe, presents his artworks independently of any prevailing rules of contemporary art.
