- About the artist
Cornelis Anthonij "Kees" van Waning was born in 1861 in The Hague. He also died here in 1929. He lived and worked in The Hague, Voorburg and Rijswijk. He also made study trips to Belgium and France.
Kees van Waning was a student of Fr. Becker and J.M. Schmidt Crans, then mainly by J. Bosboom. Later he received advice from Willem Maris. He painted, watercolored and drew landscapes, cityscapes, harbours, rivers and seas in an impressionistic style. He was a member of "Pulchri Studio" in The Hague and of "Arti et Amicitae" in Amsterdam. When Cees van Waning lived in The Hague, it was Willem Maris who encouraged him to mainly work outside. The unsullied dune area was nearby. As early as 1888 - he was 27 years old at the time - he sold dune landscapes and beach views for sometimes 800 guilders each, an enormous sum at the time. The great master Bosboom gave him kind advice and good reviews followed. At a group exhibition at the end of the 19th century, he mainly showed cityscapes and firmly brushed landscapes in bright colours.
Work by Kees van Waning is included in the collections of the Haags Gemeentemuseum, the Dordrechts Museum and the Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem.
