- About the artist
“I make ‘windows’ in which I imagine what and how I see. I look at the world around me, or in my memory, or in my fantasy. Everything is there and always, but because of who I am, my experiences, my limitations and my moods I can only allow part of the whole into my consciousness. Which part I can or cannot see and what that means to me changes over time, sometimes even from moment to moment. What is true? In any case this captured image.
My work is based on the traditional mola technique. It consists of three layers of fabric. I start with the second layer. I design an impression of an image that is meaningful to me and print it on fabric. Then I cut and zoom a geometric design in the top layer. In this way I make that emotionally charged underlying layer visible behind a ‘script’ of inexplicable signs. This top layer is often of changeant fabric, where the color changes depending on the angle of viewing. The bottom layer is for reinforcement. I often use LED lighting to also make color changes possible from the background. This emphasizes changeability and temporality.”
