Jaap Hillenius was a Dutch artist who was born in Amsterdam on 6 June 1934, he died in Amsterdam on 26 August 1999. From 1952 to 1957 he studied at the "Rijksnormaalschool voor tekenonderwijs" in Amsterdam and he became a teacher at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) between 1982 and 1990. His paintings are inspired by nature, Marcel Proust’s novels and the pointillism of George Seurat and Paul Signac. Hillenius has, nevertheless, developed a highly personal style, characterised by pointillism as well as abstract coloured areas and lines. He also created drawings, graphic art and water colours. After studying at the Amsterdam “Rijksnormaal voor Tekenonderwijs”, he was honoured with various prices, including the Henriëtte Roland Holstprijs. Jaap Hillenius died in 1999, after a tragic traffic accident.
