- About the artwork
"Nieumegen - Noviomagum". Map with profile of Nijmegen produced by Nicolaes van Geelkercken for the Historia Gelricae of 1639 by Johannes Isaacus Pontanus and published by Nicolaas van Wieringen in Harderwijk and Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam. Later hand-coloured. Sizes (print) 38 x 41.5 cm. We see the city from the River Waal. On the right a numerical legend, on the left the town arms. In 1648 the Peace of Munster brought an end to the Eighty Years' War. Nijmegen, which had long suffered in an active war zone, experienced a brief period of prosperity. (This map of the city was also made in that period.) Until in 1672, when France, England, Munster and Cologne declared war on the Republic of the United Netherlands, Nijmegen once again found itself in the firing line as a fortified city. The Historia Gelricae was translated into Dutch and completed by Arend Slichtenhorst (published in 1653/54). The map of Nijmegen by Van Geelkercken was adapted for this purpose and shortened at the bottom (without the bank of the river Waal, showing Lent and the Valkhof castle). Price: Euro 950,- (incl. frame)
