2023 - About the artist
Sebastiaan Spit's paintings and gouaches seem like a sample of light. The colossal cloud formations vary within the spectrum from the sunlight with the warm and exuberant colors of summer to the moody autumn tones and cool tones of winter.
Only the field of view, the time of day and the seasons of the year give rise to the variations of light and dark. It produces beautiful aerial spectacles. For Sebastiaan Spit clouds are an inexhaustible source of inspiration, since 1995 he mainly paints sky and clouds.
He feels related to landscape painters of the 17th century such as Jacob van Ruysdael and Constable from the 19th century, but also sees himself in the tradition of painters such as Willem de Kooning, Eugène Brands and Ger Lataster.
