"L'Hyver", etching made in 1739 by Jean Moyreau after a painting by Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). From the "Oeuvres de Philippe Wouwermens Hollandois. Gravées d'après ses meilleurs Tableaux qui sont dans les plus beaux Cabinets de Paris et ailleurs." Later hand-coloured. Size 32 x 45.5 cm. In this winter landscape we see men sawing and chopping wood. Children are collecting the smaller pieces. The horse has to carry everything. The river is frozen. On the ice children are playing foosball with a ball and a bat. A little further on, a sleigh glides, another is loaded with barrels. On the side, a ship is waiting for the thaw. Winter scenes with a thick layer of snow and frozen canals and rivers full of ice were always popular. The Old Masters loved to paint them and their popularity is reflected in the large numbers of prints made after their paintings and designs. Up to the 19th century engravers used old examples, also in France, Germany and England. Price: Euro 450,-
