Sul l'artista
Wallerant Vaillant era un pittore e grafico nato nel 1623 a Lille. È conosciuto come uno dei primi praticanti della mezzatinta. Inoltre è stato un ritrattista di grande successo, ha giocato un ruolo importante nello sviluppo del ritratto a pastello. Fu allievo di Erasmus Quellinus. Ha viaggiato molto in giro per l'Europa, ha visitato Anversa, Middelburg, Amsterdam, Francoforte sul Meno, Heidelberg e Parigi. Nel 1664 si trasferì ad Amsterdam dove rimase fino alla sua morte nel 1677. Fu insegnante di diversi membri della famiglia come Andries Valliant, Bernard Vallaint, Jacques Vaillant e Jean II Vaillaint.
