- About the artist
Jan van den Hengst was born on April 15, 1904 in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. He grew up in an environment where art and craft played an important role, which shaped his creative spirit at an early age. After high school, he studied at the prestigious Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he further developed his talent for painting.
His style was influenced by the traditions of the Hague School and Impressionism, with a particular emphasis on landscapes and village scenes. Van den Hengst had a keen eye for detail and often managed to capture the serene beauty of the Dutch countryside in his works. His favorite subjects were vast meadows, mills and farms, which he brought to life with warm, natural colors and subtle contrasts of light.
During his career, Van den Hengst gained national fame and exhibited in various galleries and art fairs. His works were praised for their harmony and technical perfection and found their way into both private collections and museums.
In addition to his artistic career, Van den Hengst was a passionate teacher. He taught young artists and shared his knowledge of composition, light and use of color. His students remembered him as a patient and inspiring mentor.
Jan van den Hengst died on September 12, 1983 in his hometown of Amersfoort. His legacy lives on in his paintings, which are a lasting reminder of his love for Dutch nature and traditions.
