- About the artist
Daniel Kruger was born in 1951 in Cape Town, South Africa but currently works and resides in Berlin, Germany where he is a professor at the University for Art and Design in Halle.
Kruger attended the Academy of Fine Arts, studying under Professor Hermann Junger, and received his diploma in 1980. Since his graduation Kruger’s work his been internationally acclaimed and Kruger has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. He is especially renowned for his contribution to contemporary jewellery and has lectured in jewellery and ceramics as well as given workshops on these subjects.
Kruger was awarded the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize and his work is part of many public and private collections including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Montreal; Pforzheim Schmuckmuseum im Reuchlinhaus, Germany; Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Montreal; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich Germany; The Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, Tokyo; and The Power House Museum, Sydney.
Kruger’s style can be characterised as to have “a distinct erotic quality” and are often seen in pairs and symmetrical. Kruger uses mathematical and organic shapes and patterns. Playing with contrast is a returning factor in his work. He is not bound to a single style or period and uses everything from Apache beading to Byzantine enamelwork.
