CHURCH ON THE ICE TO VOLENDAM "Holländisches Volksfest" lithograph made by Henry Ritter, published around 1850 in Düsseldorf by the Lithographisches Institut von Arnz & Co. Later hand-coloured. Dim. 28 x 38.8 cm. Fairgrounds were regularly celebrated on the ice, where "everyone got on their feet and the days were too short, the nights were for amusement". They were visited by a motley crew of fairgoers. "There were Poles with their dancing bears, Walloons with rarefied chickens, puppet showmen, peddlers, bagpipe blowers, song singers, fortune tellers, card readers and planet readers and in between the quick thieves, the fighters and the beggars"?
