- About the artist
Samuel (Sam) Schellink (Utrecht, 1 Augustus 1876 – Den Haag, 20 December 1958) was a Dutch aquarellist, etcher, ceramist, draughtsman, and painter. He was a self-taught artist who started his career in Utrecht, where he worked until 1892. After moving to The Hague he became an apprentice painter at the Haagsche Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg. There he became a skilled delftware painter of porcelain. He made various drawings in pencil and charcoal as well as gouaches and water colours. Among his subjects were still lifes, landscapes, and birds. When the delftware factory went bankrupt in 1914, he became a painter and art dealer. In 1918 he started work as a delftware painter in the employ of the Tegel- en Fayence-fabriek Amphora in Oegstgeest. Afterwards, he was employed by Plateelbakkerij Goedewaagen in Gouda. His work is included in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Museum Kan/Schellink in Schoonhoven.
